Does propranolol interact with foods or drinks?

This can damage the blood vessels of the brain, heart, and kidneys, resulting in a stroke, heart failure, or kidney failure. If it continues for a long time, the heart and arteries may not function properly. Hemangeol, a 4.28 mg/mL solution of propranolol, is indicated for the treatment of proliferating infantile hemangioma. It has also been used as a performance-enhancing drug in sports where high accuracy is required, including archery, shooting, golf, and snooker.

Propranolol Tablets

Propranolol can make your heart beat slower than normal (bradycardia). In the U.S., you can report side effects to the FDA at /medwatch or by calling 800-FDA-1088. It can be exposed to temperatures between 59 F to 86 F (15 C to 30 C), for shorter periods of time, such as when transporting it. Propranolol is available as Hemangeol, Inderal LA, Innopran XL, and generic propranolol in the following dosage forms that are taken by mouth. Blocking these receptors helps your heart beat more slowly. When catecholamines bind to these receptors, it causes your heart to beat harder and faster.

What do I need to tell my doctor BEFORE I take this drug?

Despite complete absorption, propranolol has a variable bioavailability due to extensive first-pass metabolism. Propranolol is rapidly and completely absorbed, with peak plasma levels achieved about 2 hours (range 1–3 hours) after ingestion. It competes with sympathomimetic neurotransmitters for binding to receptors, which inhibits sympathetic stimulation of the heart. Both enantiomers of propranolol have a local anesthetic (topical) effect, which is normally mediated by blockade of voltage-gated sodium channels.

The drug has been found to increase peak and area-under-the-curve levels of nifedipine by 1.6-fold and 1.8-fold, respectively. The lipid-lowering drug cholestyramine or colestipol decreased propranolol levels by up to 50%. The non-selective CYP450 inhibitor cimetidine has been found to increase peak propranolol levels by 1.4-fold and area-under-the-curve levels by 1.5-fold.

Stop using propranolol and get help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction. Propranolol may cause low blood pressure. While less common, the most serious side effects of propranolol are described below, along with what to do if they happen.

About propranolol

Propranolol is used alone or together with other medicines to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). High-dose long-acting propranolol has been found to increase thioridazine levels by 1.6- to 4.7-fold and levels of its metabolite mesoridazine by 1.3- to 3.1-fold. The NSAID indomethacin specifically may reduce the efficacy of propranolol in decreasing heart rate and blood pressure. Propranolol is a beta-blocker used to treat high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats, shaking (tremors), and other conditions.

Stopping propranolol suddenly may make your health problem worse. If you’re bothered by side effects, your doctor may be able to prescribe a different medicine instead. For migraines, treatment can last for Propranolol brands several months or years, depending on how bad your symptoms are. It slows down your heart rate and makes it easier for your heart to pump blood around your body.

Do not stop taking this medication without talking to your healthcare provider first. Stopping propranolol suddenly may lead to chest pain or heart attack in people with heart disease. Do not take propranolol unless it has been prescribed to you by a healthcare provider. Stop using propranolol and contact your healthcare provider right away if you have trouble breathing.

How is propranolol supplied (dosage forms)?

Tell your healthcare provider about all medicines that you take or have recently taken. Propranolol can lower blood pressure and may increase the risk for stroke in people with PHACE syndrome that have abnormal blood vessels in the brain. These effects can help your heart work better, lower blood pressure, and may reduce your risk for heart attack and stroke. This medicine may increase the risk of heart or blood vessel problems (eg, bradycardia, hypotension). When the blood pressure is lowered, the amount of blood and oxygen is increased to the heart.

Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. No information is available on the relationship of age to the effects of propranolol oral solution in geriatric patients. Appropriate studies have not been performed on the relationship of age to the effects of propranolol capsules, extended-release capsules, and tablets in the pediatric population. Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. This medicine may also be used to treat irregular heartbeats, tremors, or pheochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumor).

Effects of propranolol on other drugs

Place the medication in a safe location – one that is up and away and out of their sight and reach. Keep all medication out of sight and reach of children as many containers are not child-resistant. Talk to your pharmacist about take-back programs in your community. Do not flush this medication down the toilet. Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children.

It has little intrinsic sympathomimetic activity, but has strong membrane stabilizing activity (only at high blood concentrations, e.g. overdose). Propranolol is classified as a competitive non-cardioselective sympatholytic beta blocker that crosses the blood–brain barrier. Propranolol has been found to increase the bioavailability and effects of warfarin. Conversely, propranolol does not affect various other benzodiazepines, including oxazepam, triazolam, lorazepam, and alprazolam. Propranolol has been found to increase area-under-the-curve levels of propafenone by more than 3-fold.
